THE FUTURE ME

I had a conversation with Steph a little while back about life goals. She asked if there was anything from my past I would go back and change, or a version of myself I would want to revisit. My honest answer was no. Right now is the best time of my life. I am the happiest I have ever been, I am doing things that matter to me, and I am surrounded by people I love. I would not trade that.

But when it came to music specifically, I did admit there was one thing I would bring back to my current self. Not a sound. Not a song. A feeling. That particular brand of blind, fearless bravery I had when I was just getting started.

When I was coming up in this game, I did not know enough to stay afraid. I started a band before I was ready. I got on stage and sang with no real vocal experience behind me. I crept into Pittsburgh's music scene when it was deep in gatekeeper mode and pushed forward anyway. I handed demos to national artists. I got into the local music media. I played guitar exactly the way I wanted to play and built a name doing it. I was the first to do a lot of things in my corner of this city, and that was the fuel for everything. The gas in the engine. The fire. The raw tenacity to do something great.

What was underneath all of that was an unshakeable belief in myself even though I was kind of an underdog. My mindset was, “You doubt me? Awesome! I’m gonna 10x my efforts!” I am not saying I've fully lost that energy. But somewhere along the way it got quieter. More calculated. More careful. Less willing to just go for it without a plan.

After some real months of soul searching -- digging back into old unfinished music, revisiting shelved ideas, sitting with things I had put down a long time ago -- something woke back up. I'm tapping into that version of me that did not wait until it was perfect. The artist that created without asking for permission, or cared how it would be received. I'm awakening the sleeping giant side of me that moved first and figured it out along the way. He is back. And I've got a lot to say.

That is why you are going to start seeing more solo shows, fill-in, & collaborations on the calendar. That is why I am deep in the studio working on new solo music. And that is why my next single, dropping late August, is c alled The Future Me.
